The audit cadence by phase
The frequency of your AI visibility audits should match the pace of change in your GEO program and competitive environment.
Phase 1: The baseline (before you start)
Before any GEO work, run a full audit. Test your business against 10–15 queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. Document exactly what each engine says — whether you appear, in what context, and which competitors are cited instead.
This baseline is the most important audit you will ever run. Without it, you cannot measure progress or attribute improvements to specific actions.
Phase 2: Monthly checks during the foundation stage (months 1–3)
During the first 90 days, run a lightweight check monthly — not the full query set, but a sample of 5–6 representative queries. The goal is to confirm your schema changes and entity updates are propagating, catch any regressions quickly, and build a sense of what the engines are seeing.
Phase 3: Quarterly full audits (months 4+)
After your foundation is complete, quarterly full audits are sufficient for most businesses in stable competitive environments. A quarterly audit takes 60–90 minutes and covers the full query set against all four engines.
Triggered audits
Run a spot audit whenever:
- A significant competitor launches or changes their GEO program
- Google, ChatGPT, or Perplexity announces a major platform update
- You make significant changes to your entity, schema, or content architecture
- You receive an unexpected surge or drop in AI-attributed inquiries
The consistency rule
Use the same query set every time. Adding new queries mid-program makes it impossible to compare results across periods. If you want to test new query types, create a separate expansion set and track them independently from your baseline set.
