The platform hierarchy for AI visibility
Not all review platforms carry equal weight across all AI engines and buyer segments. The right platform mix depends on where your buyers do their research and which engines matter most for your business.
Tier 1: Google Business Profile
For the majority of businesses, GBP reviews are the single highest-impact review platform for AI visibility. They feed directly into Google AI Overviews, Google Maps recommendations, and Google's local knowledge graph. They are also the first thing Perplexity and ChatGPT encounter when crawling for business reputation data.
Every business should prioritize GBP reviews first, regardless of industry.
Tier 2: Industry-Specific Platforms
Once your GBP review base is established (target: 25+ reviews with recent velocity), invest in the platform most used by your buyer segment:
- Yelp — local service businesses (restaurants, salons, contractors, healthcare)
- Clutch — B2B agencies, marketing firms, consulting practices
- G2 / Capterra — software and SaaS businesses
- Zocdoc / Healthgrades — healthcare providers
- Houzz / Angi — home improvement and contractor businesses
- Avvo / Martindale — legal practices
- TripAdvisor — hospitality and tourism businesses
Tier 3: General Platforms
Facebook, Trustpilot, and Yelp (for non-local businesses) are third-tier — useful for review volume and cross-platform corroboration, but lower signal weight than industry-specific platforms for most query types.
The multi-platform advantage
AI engines treat multi-platform reputation as a more reliable signal than single-platform concentration. A business with 40 GBP reviews and 20 Clutch reviews is a stronger recommendation candidate than a business with 60 reviews concentrated on one platform — because multi-platform presence corroborates the claims rather than relying on a single source.
