Backlinks in the AI search era
Backlinks — links from external websites to your pages — have been a foundational SEO signal for 25 years. The question for GEO is whether they retain relevance when AI engines synthesize answers rather than rank pages.
The answer is: yes, but the mechanism has changed.
How backlinks feed AI engine authority
AI engines that crawl the web (Perplexity, ChatGPT with Browse, Google's index for AI Overviews) weight content from domains they evaluate as credible. Domain credibility is still substantially influenced by the quality and volume of inbound links. A page on a domain that 40 reputable external sites link to is treated as more authoritative than the same content on an unlinked domain.
The change is in what "quality" means. AI engines appear to weight editorial backlinks — links placed because a publisher found your content worth referencing — more heavily than directory links, paid links, or reciprocal schemes. An editorial link from a trade publication citing your methodology page is worth more than 100 directory submissions.
The citation loop
There is also a direct citation loop for AI visibility: the external sites that link to your content are often the same sites AI engines draw on as source material. A trade publication that links to your research is not just sending link equity — it is establishing your content as a source that the publication considers credible. When an AI engine reads that publication's content, it also reads their citations — and your work is on that list.
What to pursue
- Press and media mentions: Pitch journalists in your industry with specific story angles that use your data, case studies, or expertise
- Industry association features: Guest articles, speaking opportunities, and directory listings from recognized associations in your field
- Partner and supplier citations: Co-marketing content, case studies with clients, and supplier spotlight features that earn legitimate inbound links
- Original research: Data, surveys, or analysis that other sites cite in their own content — the highest-authority backlink type
What to avoid: any link building that scales through automation, purchase, or artificial reciprocity. These approaches were declining in value before AI search and are now actively counterproductive.
