SEO and GEO are not competitors
The premise behind "abandoning SEO" is a false choice. GEO is not a competing discipline — it is a complementary layer built on top of traditional SEO. Strong SEO practices make GEO more effective; weak SEO undermines GEO results.
What carries forward from SEO
Most of your existing SEO investment transfers directly to your GEO program:
- Technical health — fast, crawlable, mobile-friendly pages are a prerequisite for AI engines to index and cite your content
- Domain authority and backlinks — third-party links remain a signal of credibility that AI engines factor into source reliability
- Topical content library — existing articles and service pages can be upgraded with structured data, schema markup, and Quick Answer sections rather than rebuilt from scratch
- Google Business Profile — if you have maintained GBP for local SEO, you are ahead of competitors on one of the highest-weighted AI Overview signals
What to stop or change
There are a handful of SEO-era practices that actively interfere with GEO:
- Keyword stuffing — exact-match keyword density optimization produces unnatural content that AI engines do not cite as authoritative
- Thin content pages — pages built to rank for long-tail variants but containing little substantive information score poorly on the citation-worthiness dimension AI engines evaluate
- Inconsistent NAP — local SEO sometimes tolerates minor NAP variations across directories; GEO requires exact consistency for entity resolution
The upgrade model
Rather than abandoning existing content, the most effective approach is a structured upgrade:
- Add FAQ schema and a Quick Answer section to your highest-traffic pages
- Rewrite thin pages into authority resources with 700+ words of substantive content
- Add sameAs links and Organization schema to your homepage and About page
- Run an entity consistency audit across all platforms
Think of it as upgrading your existing library, not burning it down and starting over.
