What a Google Knowledge Panel is
A Google Knowledge Panel is the information card that appears on the right side of Google Search results when you search for a specific entity — a business, person, or organization that Google has resolved into its knowledge graph. It displays the entity's name, category, description, contact information, photos, and related entities.
Having a Knowledge Panel indicates Google has resolved your business as a confident entity — a signal that also influences Google AI Overviews and Gemini recommendations.
How Knowledge Panels are generated
Google generates Knowledge Panels automatically based on entity resolution confidence. There is no application or request process. When your entity signals reach a sufficient confidence threshold — consistent schema, complete GBP, multiple corroborating sameAs sources, and sufficient third-party references — Google's systems create or update your panel.
The fastest path to Knowledge Panel generation
For most businesses, the fastest path is:
- Complete your Google Business Profile — this is the most direct feed into Google's local knowledge graph
- Implement Organization schema with sameAs links to GBP, LinkedIn, and other authoritative profiles
- Ensure NAP consistency across all major directories
- Accumulate third-party references — press mentions, industry directory listings, and review platform profiles
- Publish a well-structured About page with Person schema for the key individual
Businesses that complete all five steps typically see a Knowledge Panel generate within 4–12 weeks, though Google does not publish timeline guarantees.
Claiming an existing Knowledge Panel
If a Knowledge Panel already exists for your business but contains incorrect information, you can claim it through Google's Knowledge Panel verification process (search your business name, click "Claim this knowledge panel"). Claiming allows you to suggest updates and verify ownership, though Google retains editorial control.
A note on realistic expectations
Not every local or small business will earn a standalone Knowledge Panel — Google sets the entity confidence threshold based on available signals. However, entity recognition in AI engines (which is the metric that drives GEO ROI) does not require a Knowledge Panel. Appearing in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity recommendations happens below the Knowledge Panel threshold.
